Fix F150 Lug Nuts Fast!
Переглядів 21 тис.3 роки тому
Most 2015- and newer F-150 trucks have issues with "swollen" lug nuts. When this happens your lug wrench will no longer remove your lug nuts because the lug wrench will no longer fit onto the lug nuts. Here I show you how to remove the chrome outer cover on top of the steel lug nut so that you can remove the lug nuts. You will need a 1-1/8" carbide hole saw to perform this job. @Sir_Wrecks_A_Lot

Closest dealer is about 2 hours away and I don't want to be in the middle of nowhere and it not conk out and not be able to get to the dealership for them to figure it out. I did get it fixed. Turns out that the crank sensor wire cable was not plugged into the connector properly. So I just had to push down on the wire to let it seat into connector properly and I haven't had any problems since so it's essentially fixed now.

Not just Ford - have a 2018 Tundra with same issue. I thought dealer was trying to pull one over on me. I am an ex mechanic and have never heard of all the lug nuts on a vehicle "swollen". wanted $580 to replace them! My lugs 22mm. I bought a set from Amazon for $50. I took a 7/8' socket and hammered it on to take old ones off. Specs say 97 ft lb for the lugs, they were on waaaay tighter than that! And only Toyota has rotated my tires - their guns are tightening them too tight and doing the damage. A shame that you pay so much for your truck, and the quality of everything on them is so shoddy!!!

Amazing hack, I thought my stud was going bad because I couldn't torque a lug nut down it would just spin. Ordered new lug nuts to at least replace on the tire with the issue to have 3 out of 6 not come off and just spin. To find out I was just spinning these chrome caps. You saved me a huge headache trying to call around for help on a simple fix that only cost 40 dollars.

Just want to make sure you are not starving the compressor of clean air or overheating the pump. Nice compressor and good luck.

Used a 1 1/8” Diablo hole saw. Still took a few minutes to get each cap off and had to switch to a corded power drill. At some point, cap just spins with the hole saw. Had to tilt hole saw to force cap to bind, thus allowing hole saw to cut. A real pain in the ass, but this is probably least frustrating way to get the caps off.

Solid 1 piece lugnits are available at auto parts stores such as Napa, CarQuest and O'Reilly, if they don't have them in stock they can order them for you. Usually takes a day or 2 to arrive. The 1 piece unit is a solid metal lugnut in the factory style without the chrome cap over the core and is a much 'MUCH' better replacement, and they are available in 21mm like the factory lugnuts so your lugnut wrench will still work. I work at Walmart in the Auto Care Center and we get these issues regularly. Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for the customer, Walmart does not charge extra to replace these, but we can't always get the old lugnuts off so a trip to another car repair shop may still be required to remove them. However if the customer provides their own and Walmart can get the old lugnuts off, we will install the new lugnuts for free if done with a balance/rotate. Usually a 21 mm socket can be driven on and usually the lugnut will come off with a socket then. The core inside the cap can also be removed with a 19.5mm impact socket. Also available at auto parts stores. The socket is usually going to be a flip socket, so the other side will be 18.5mm usable for what should have been a 19mm socket, but an 18mm may also work in most situations. What happens is, after several removals/installs, the chrome cap will start to stretch and tiny cracks will form in the cap. Then moisture and dirt can enter the space between the cap and the inner lugnut core. Then in freezing weather, the cap will swell and come out of factory specs. You can't really do anything about it. If you have one of these style lugnuts, it's going to happen guaranteed. Chrysler products also had these types of lugnuts so it's a quite well known situation. Once the lugnuts are replaced, they do have a factory torque spec and should be installed using a torque wrench. On the F150, the torque is 150 ft/lbs. The F250 and F350 are usually 160 ft/lbs. (most off the shelf torque wrenches do top out at 150 ft/lbs and usually that will be sufficient on the F250 and F350. Just recheck your torque occasionally to ensure the lugnuts are still on at that torque. However, if you are willing to shell out a bit more than shelf price, you can get a wrench that will go up to 250 ft/lbs). On Dodge Ram 1500, the torque is 130-135 ft/lbs. The Ram 2500 and 3500 are usually 135-145 ft/lbs and on all GM trucks it's 140 ft/lbs. Don't set the impact wrench on the highest setting when tightning the lugnuts, that will almost always lock the lugnut on over factory specs. Set the impact wrench on 2 or 3 and finish with the torque wrench on every lugnut. If it doesn't move on the first click, then odds are it's over the factory spec. You should loosen the lugnut slightly and retighten it with the torque wrench only. Do a couple of torques on each lugnut, then after a day or 2 of driving, recheck the lugnut torque. Also, applying a small amount of lube to the stud before installing the lugnut will keep the lugnut from seizing on the stud and making removal difficult next time. At Walmart we use anti-seize, but I grew up on the farm, using engine oil right from the dipstick on the vehicle or tractor or from a small oil can, but in later years, we also used transmission oil in an oil can too. In the end, the results are the same, it's much easier to remove the lugnut the next time if the stud is lubed prior to installing the lugnut. So, why are these types of lugnuts used on vehicles? Probably because some distributor offered them at a good price and no one on the funding end of the vehicle manufacturing facility had the foresight to know this kind of issue would happen. Personally, I'd call it a factory defect and the dealerships should be replacing these for free. But lugnuts are a replacement item on a vehicle and along with the studs, should be replaced every so often anyway, so that may be how they get around it.

I have a 2017 Ford Escape Titanium AWD 2.0. .With the Black trim package. 19 inch rims. Had the tires replaced at 32,000 miles from Continental's to Michelin Cross Climate 2's. Improved the handling. The tire dealer never told me about the swollen lugnuts. That Ford gave us Ford owners. Took my Ecsape to the Ford Dealership for oil change and tire rotation. The dealership never told me about the lugnuts either. Was told that the back brakes needed to be rebulit. Took the Escape back two weeks later for brake service. Get a call from the Dealership that all the lugnuts need replaced for $180.00. I said are you selling me the same lugnuts. Oh, Yes! The same lugnuts. No way! Find a cheaper replacement. Called O' Reilly's. Mcgard chrome replacements for $80.00. My Dealership knew the the lugnuts were bad from the start. So when I got the Survey from the Dealership. I gave them all three's. They called and wanted to know why. So , I told them that the lugnut issue has been going on since 2010 and why did they try and sell me. The same old lugnuts. So I would have to replace them again. That's why I never give the Dealership more than 3's ever. They will rob you blind. If you let them! Shawn

    • @dannyo6699

If you have a regular impact socket set, a 20mm should get it off, but if you check at an auto parts store, you can find a flip socket with 19.5mm and 18.5mm on the other side. The 19.5 side is the one for these and the 18.5 is for the 19mm sockets that failed. Usually those are on the Chrysler cars and minivans, and you know those are bad because the caps will just fall off so you might not have to cut those off to get it to work on them.

The garage must use one hell of an impact wrench to put those nuts on. I jumped up and down on the end of that 2x4 before those nuts turned. Then in freezing weather, the cap will swell and go out of specs. I work at Walmart in the Auto Care Center and we see this same thing all the time. Personally it should be a factory recall item. Excellent. Ford is not the only one to use these crap Lug Nuts. Go with one piece and a super HINT>: Put some Never Seize™ on the area of the wheel (Bevel) that the lug nut contacts. Corrosion can cause the nut to freeze to the dissimilar metal wheel and you may need a 3/4 drive Impact to break that bond. I had to on my Denali. You may be able to purchase a 6 point Impact Socket that is .5 mm larger. 19.5 mm? They may not be available in all sizes. If it won't move, try tightening it first then get a cheater bar for your Johnson Bar. DO NOT hold the joint of the Johnson bar. I saw one break under force and really carve open the mans palm. Torque is 140 ft lbs + on my wheel lugs. Check your model.
